Introduction to acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the ancient practice of inserting tiny, thin needles in various points on the body to alleviate pain and remedy various ailments and discomforts.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture helps to regulate the various systems in our bodies. By activating certain acupuncture points, messages are sent to the brain, nervous system, and all other systems—such as the circulatory, immune, digestive, endocrine, and reproductive systems—in order to regain balance.

An acupuncturist acts as a detective of sorts, piecing together your symptoms, pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis and observation. Then, this information is compiled to determine what is out of balance internally—or what is not functioning at its best potential. To regain internal equilibrium, known as homeostasis, an acupuncturist will reactivate blockages and stagnations.

Does it hurt?

Most clients find the experience peaceful, relaxing and painless. Occasionally, needles create sensation (especially when a point is very active) or discomfort, but pain is not common.
